How to make a hibiscus bonsai

How to make hibiscus bonsai

First, plant the hibiscus tree seedlings in a large clay pot or maintain them underground. Its growth rate is very fast. The seedlings that are layered and divided can be twisted and bent in the same year, and the seedlings that are sown can be twisted and bent in the second year. At the same time, pay attention to topping and pinching to control the height of the plant and promote the thickening of the branches.

In addition, you can also choose old hibiscus tree stumps that have grown for many years, have short plants and peculiar shapes to make bonsai. Transplanting can be done in spring. First, "grow the seedlings" underground or in a larger clay pot to ensure their survival. Wait for the branches and buds to start growing, and then shape them after making sure the plants are alive.

Since young trees and large branches on the trunk generally grow straight and have few twigs, they can be allowed to grow and then cut off when the branch thickness meets the requirements to promote side branches. During the "nurturing" period, it should be given sufficient sunlight and thin fertilizer should be applied frequently to promote its growth. Useless buds should be removed in time to prevent them from consuming too many nutrients and affecting the growth of other branches by growing into branches.

Hibiscus Bonsai Shaping and Pruning

Hibiscus trees can be made into bonsai in many different forms, including straight-trunk, double-trunk, water-facing, slanted-trunk, curved-trunk, exposed-root, and stone-attached.

Hibiscus trees are not suitable for excessive pruning, but their branches are relatively long, so they should be carefully twisted and tied when shaping, and more branches should be left appropriately. After the trees grow up, the excess branches can be cut off and the branches that are too long can be shortened to form a full and compact crown. The winding and tying of hibiscus bonsai can be done at any time, usually in conjunction with pruning after flowering.

The trunk of the hibiscus tree is smooth, so when making bonsai, it should appear in its natural appearance, highlighting the characteristics of the tree species, while also showing its healthy and sturdy posture. There is no need to deliberately pursue "simplicity" and carve the trunk into holes.
