How to make bonsai with osmanthus

Bonsai Making

Source

The materials for osmanthus bonsai mainly come from seeding, cutting, layering, grafting, division and seedling propagation, as well as tassel tree stumps that have been dug from the mountains for many years.

Select pot

A deep square or round basin is suitable as the container. The best material for the pot is purple clay pot or glazed pot. Purple or ochre colors are better, as they can contrast sharply with the colors of flowers and leaves, increasing its ornamental effect.

The process of basin

Osmanthus likes fertilizer and is suitable for fertile, loose, well-drained sandy loam. The growing soil for potted osmanthus is usually made of garden soil, compost and river sand, and it also needs to be disinfected to reduce diseases and pests. It is usually carried out in early spring or autumn. Before potting, a layer of river sand or vermiculite is placed at the bottom of the pot to facilitate ventilation and drainage. Then a layer of peat soil or fine mud about 3 cm thick is placed on top. Then, place the osmanthus seedlings with the soil ball on the roots into the pot, cover it with culture soil and press it tightly with your fingers. The depth of the soil should be close to the mouth of the pot, and the soil surface should be 2 to 3 cm lower than the mouth of the pot. After potting, water it thoroughly and place it in a shaded place for about 10 days to allow it to "acclimate to the pot" and gradually resume growth.

Posture Technology

Osmanthus is resistant to pruning and has strong germination ability. Generally, after 1 or 2 years in pots, it can be processed and shaped after the flowers bloom or in the rainy season, mainly by combining climbing and pruning. The main trunk can be tied into an oblique or curved shape; if the main trunk is higher, it can be shortened appropriately to allow new branches to sprout from the base to avoid emptiness in the lower part. The upper branches and overly dense branches can also be cut off to stimulate the growth of new branches in the lower part of the trunk, thereby achieving a balance between the upper and lower parts and keeping the tree shape neat and the flowers and leaves lush.

The bonsai shape of osmanthus is suitable for curved trunk style, slanted trunk style or flowing trunk style. The tree has a slanting shape, dense branches and leaves, and is simple and natural, making it the most enjoyable to appreciate. When it blooms, the fragrance is rich and refreshing.
