Cedar is best planted in a purple clay pot, but it can also be planted in a glazed clay pot. Large bonsai can be made in deep round pots or various chiseled stone pots, but the base must be fixed with metal wire. For small seedlings planted in a jungle style, shallow stone pots such as alum stone or marble can be used.

Cedar can grow in loose, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam. Potted plants are often made with mature garden soil or leaf mold mixed with sand.

The processing and shaping of cedar bonsai is mainly based on climbing and tying, supplemented by pruning. Winter and spring are the best times for climbing, and palm fiber is often used for climbing. The main trunk of the cedar is upright, and the side branches are spread out, so the side branches are often bent into an S shape. The main trunk is generally not bent, and naturally grows upward into a large tree shape, with an extremely simple and beautiful posture. You can also take 5-7 seedlings grown that year, staggered in height, and plant them together in a jungle style, with swaying branches and leaves, which has a unique charm.

The cedar tree is tall and straight, with side branches hanging down and stretching out. When making bonsai, one must utilize its natural form. The best tree shapes are straight trunk, double trunk, slanted trunk, and jungle. The branches and leaves can be made into layers or cloud shapes by pruning, and after years of maintenance, they can become a bonsai that is both strong and soft and has an elegant posture.
