How to dwarf potted honeysuckle

How to dwarf potted honeysuckle

Controlling water and fertilizer for dwarfing honeysuckle

For honeysuckle potted plants, the growth of vines must be restricted, the tree shape must be controlled, and the number of flowers must be increased. Avoid rain in spring, reduce watering, prevent excessive growth, promote aging of stems and vines, shorten internodes, and dwarf the plant shape. Before flower buds form, apply less or no nitrogen fertilizer, and increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote flower bud formation and increase the number of flowers. Apply nitrogen fertilizer appropriately during the period when branches stop growing and during the bud formation period to make the flowers bloom big and bright.

How to change the pot at the right time to dwarf honeysuckle

Generally, potted flowers should be repotted once every one or two years, while honeysuckle bonsai should be repotted once every three or four years. Due to the infrequent repotting, the absorption function of the root system is weakened, the aging of the plant is promoted, excessive growth is inhibited, the tree vigor is moderated, the stems and vines are made thick, the internodes are dense, the plant shape is dwarfed, and the flowers are luxuriant.

Growth inhibitors

When the branches of honeysuckle sprout out to about 5 cm, spray or water with 700 to 1000 ppm paclobutrazol, or 2000 to 4000 ppm B9, or 1000 to 2000 ppm chlormequat chloride for several times to inhibit the vigorous growth of stems and vines and dwarf the tree shape.

Honeysuckle dwarfing and shaping pruning

Start dwarfing and shaping the plant from the moment it is planted in a pot, and cultivate it into a thick trunk with short branches. During the growing season, remove vigorously growing buds, pinch off strong branches early, and prune to make sure the branches are long and short. Through shaping and pruning, the tree is transformed from a winding vine type to a short shrub type with short branches and short trunks, evenly distributed and densely planted branches, and obvious layers.

Long-day treatment for dwarfing honeysuckle

Honeysuckle is a light-loving, long-day plant. If the environment is poorly ventilated and light-permeable, and is damp, the stems and vines will grow too long, the branches will be thin and weak, the leaves will easily turn yellow and fall off, and there will be few flowers. Therefore, the honeysuckle bonsai should be placed in a sunny place, preferably with direct sunlight all day, to make the branches thick and short, the leaves lush and the flowers abundant, thus extending the flowering period.
