How to care for kiwi seedlings?

Kiwi fruit has a soft texture, sweet and sour taste, and is rich in nutrients. Many people like to eat this fruit. In recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards, the demand for kiwi fruit has continued to grow, and its planting area has also continued to expand. Many people want to grow kiwi fruit, so how to maintain kiwi seedlings ? Let’s take a look below.

1. Planting period

The suitable period for planting kiwifruit is usually from leaf fall to before germination the following year. During this period, the kiwifruit seedlings are in a dormant period, with a lot of nutrients stored in their bodies, low transpiration, easy root repair, and a high survival rate. In the south, the winter is warm, there is no freezing, and there is more rain in autumn than in spring, so it is best to plant in autumn and winter, which is conducive to root repair and wound repair, short seedling period, early germination, fast shoot growth, and vigorous growth and development.

2. Planting Method

1. Soil improvement: Kiwi fruit likes loose and breathable soil. Before planting, organic fertilizer and bio-organic fertilizer should be applied reasonably according to the soil organic matter content in the plantation area to make the soil organic matter content above 3%. At the same time, deep tillage improves soil permeability.

2. Seedling selection: The kiwifruit seedlings selected for planting must have a quarantine certificate to avoid introducing seedlings with quarantine pests and diseases. Many kiwifruit plantations are plagued by canker and root-knot nematode diseases brought to seedlings by these two diseases, which can cause large-scale infection and are incurable. In severe cases, they can destroy the plantations.

3. Digging a hole: Dig a pit with a length, width and depth of 60-80 cm and a depth of 40 cm along the planting point. Then, place a pile of about 20 cm of soil at the planting point in the pit in the shape of an "inverted pot bottom" and compact the soil pile.

4. Seedling treatment: Before planting, the roots of the seedlings should be properly pruned to cut off rotten roots, diseased and insect-infested roots, weak roots, damaged roots and excessively long roots, create new wounds, and promote the germination of new roots.

5. Planting: Place the soaked seedlings on top of the soil pile at the bottom of the pot, with the roots evenly distributed on the slope of the soil pile and allowed to droop naturally. The trunk should be upright. When the roots of the seedlings are buried 1/3 to 2/3 of the depth, lift the seedlings upward 2 to 3 times to allow the roots to stretch. When the roots of the seedlings are all buried in the soil, it is difficult to easily pull them out and complete the covering. Root-fixing water should be applied immediately after planting. After the water has completely penetrated, cover the tree tray with 2 cm thick dry fine soil to protect the soil moisture.

6. Short cutting and film covering: After planting kiwi seedlings, leave 2 to 3 full buds for short cutting. Covering the tree tray with black film can retain moisture, increase ground temperature, facilitate root growth and development, and improve the survival rate of seedlings.

3. Notes

1. Kiwi fruit is neither water-resistant nor drought-resistant. When building a new orchard, it is necessary to consider sufficient water sources and rainy drainage. Areas with insufficient water sources or low terrain are not suitable for growing kiwifruit.

2. The decomposed organic fertilizer applied before planting should be mixed with the soil layer to prevent root burn.

Due to the differences in kiwifruit varieties, climatic conditions, natural environment for growth and development, and planting and management methods, the planting techniques for kiwifruit seedlings also vary greatly. Each region should make appropriate adjustments based on local conditions.
