What to do if camellia petals wilt

What to do if camellia petals wilt

1. Stop fertilizing during the flowering period

Reason: Fertilizing camellia during the flowering period will not increase nutrients, but will be detrimental to flowering.

Solution: Stop fertilizing or apply less fertilizer to camellia during its flowering period, especially avoid applying nitrogen fertilizer. You can apply a small amount of phosphorus fertilizer to promote flowering. Fertilizer should also be diluted frequently and should not be applied before or after watering to avoid damaging the roots.

2. Less water during flowering period

Reason: As the saying goes, dry flowers lead to wet fruits. Too much water during the flowering period will be detrimental to its growth, and the flowers should be kept away from water.

Solution: Water less during the flowering period and keep the soil in the pot slightly moist. In particular, do not spray water on the flowers, otherwise they will cause mildew. In addition, it is best to use river water for watering. If it is tap water, it should be left for a few days before use.

3. Pick the buds in time

Reason: Too many flower buds often lead to scattered distribution of nutrients. Although there are many flowers, the petals are wilted.

Solution: Keep only one flower bud on each branch and remove the extra ones in time. At the same time, the flower buds on weak branches and dead branches should be removed. If it is a smaller plant, all the flower buds should be picked off to avoid poor growth in the second year.

4. Winter insulation

Reason: Camellia itself is not cold-resistant, and low temperatures will cause the flowers to grow poorly.

Solution: Move the camellia indoors in time and keep it above 10℃. Since camellia has a long flowering period and some even bloom in winter, low temperatures can easily cause the petals to wilt.
