Why does trumpet creeper not bloom?

Why does trumpet creeper not bloom?

Reason 1: Seedlings

The trumpet creepers in many flower lovers' homes are obtained through sowing, cuttings, etc. The plants are still in the seedling stage, and it is normal for them not to bloom in this state. It usually takes several years to reach maturity before it can bloom. If the trumpet creeper in your home is grown from seeds, it may take 10 years for it to bloom.

Reason 2: Lack of sunlight

Lack of sunlight is one of the common reasons why trumpet creepers do not bloom. Trumpet creeper likes sunlight, and the flowers on the sunny side will be more colorful. If the trumpet creeper grows in a cool place for a long time, although the stems will still grow towards the sun, the plant will find it difficult to bloom due to lack of sunlight and insufficient nutrient accumulation.

If you want the trumpet creeper to bloom, ensure at least 8 to 10 hours of sunlight every day.

Reason 3: Too much fertilizer

Too much fertilizer or too rich soil will cause the trumpet creeper to not bloom. It will grow well and flower much more easily when planted in rocky soil. Especially when applying fertilizer, if a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer is applied, although the plants grow lushly and have dense branches and leaves, they will consume more nutrients and flowering will be ignored.

Therefore, when applying fertilizer, pay attention to the appropriate concentration. To promote flowering, you can increase the proportion of phosphorus fertilizer (or bone meal) in the fertilizer to promote the flowering of trumpet creeper.

Reason 4: Wrong pruning time

Incorrect pruning time and method will cause the trumpet creeper to not bloom. It usually blooms on the new growth of branches of the current year. If this part is accidentally cut off during pruning, it will affect flowering.

If pruning is necessary, it can be done in winter or early spring. When pruning in early spring, try to avoid new branches. Focus on pruning old branches to enhance light transmittance and promote flowering.
