How often should I change the water of lucky bamboo?

Lucky bamboo is a plant with extremely strong vitality. If you want it to grow vigorously, you need to meet its growth conditions. When growing lucky bamboo in water, you need to change the water frequently. So how often should you change the water for lucky bamboo? Let’s take a look at it together below.

1. How often should you change the water for lucky bamboo?

1. Rooting period

It takes 15-30 days for lucky bamboo to grow new roots in hydroponics. This period of time is called the rooting period. The water needs to be changed frequently to avoid unclean water affecting root growth. Change the water every 3-5 days, or every 2-3 days. You can decide whether to change the water based on the actual water quality.

2. Maturity

When lucky bamboo grows new roots and is up to 1cm long, this period is the maturity period and the water needs to be changed every 7-10 days. You can change half of the water and keep half of the water to avoid yellowing of the leaves and quick evaporation of water and replenish water in time.

3. Summer and Winter

In summer, the temperature is high and the water evaporates quickly, so you can change the water every 5-7 days. In winter, the weather is cold and the lucky bamboo grows slowly, so you can change the water every 15-20 days. If the water becomes turbid, you need to replace it all to avoid root rot.

2. Tips for caring for lucky bamboo

1. When cutting the bottom of the lucky bamboo stem, the requirements for flat or oblique cutting are not strict. Just make sure the blade is sharp and the cut is smooth. However, the cutting position should be a little below the node as much as possible for better results. This will prevent the bottom of the stem from rotting and make it easier for the nodes to take root.

2. When the indoor air is relatively dry, we can use a spray bottle to spray around the plant to increase the relative humidity of the air. This will help the leaves of the lucky bamboo stay green and the leaf tips (tops of the leaves) will not turn yellow easily.

3. Lucky bamboo has high requirements on water quality and it is better to use pure water. However, many people prefer to use tap water. Tap water contains a lot of chlorine, so it is best to let it sit for 24 hours before using it. The water temperature should be close to the room temperature so as not to damage the roots.

4. After one year of caring for lucky bamboo, the stems tend to become thinner and the leaves become smaller. At this time, we can add appropriate nutrients to the water. For example, nutrient solution should be replenished once every half a month to make up for the nutrients missing in the water and promote its healthy growth. The suitable temperature for growth is between 15-25℃. When the temperature is too low or too high, stop using nutrient solution to avoid putting more burden on its root system.

5. Although lucky bamboo is an indoor foliage plant, it also needs to obtain energy through photosynthesis. Don't be impulsive and move the plants from the greenhouse to outdoors for a day in the sun. The sudden change in temperature and the huge contrast in the environment can easily cause sunburn on the stems and leaves. So we just need to place it next to the windowsill and receive diffuse light to meet its needs.
