What to do if dahlias only grow leaves but no flowers

Reasons why dahlias don't bloom

Improper maintenance

Factors such as sunlight, watering, and temperature may cause poor growth of dahlias. Insufficient sunlight or excessive watering will cause the plant to grow too tall and only grow leaves without flowers. However, applying too much fertilizer or the soil in the pot is too wet will cause the roots of the plant to breathe poorly, resulting in root rot and also affecting flowering.

Pest and disease infestation

During the dahlia flowering period, that is, when the flower buds are differentiating, if it is invaded by pests and diseases, the flower buds will be difficult to differentiate, and it will be difficult to bloom.

What to do if dahlias don’t bloom?

Increase lighting

Whether there is sufficient light is the key to growing dahlias. Insufficient light will cause the branches to grow too long and become thin. Due to insufficient nutrients in the plant, it will not bloom or will bloom less.

Increase fertilization

Sufficient basal fertilizer must be applied before planting or before the plants germinate. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, the frequency of topdressing can be appropriately increased.

Enhanced antifreeze

If you are in a relatively cold area, you need to cover the ground with some dead grass after winter, or dig out the dahlia tubers, dry them, and store them indoors, and then plant them in pots or in the ground around the Qingming Festival of the second year.
