Why don't geraniums bloom?

Why don't geraniums bloom?

Flowering period

Generally speaking, geranium blooms from May to July and fruits from June to September.

The specific geographical location in China depends on the location: if it is in the north, it will bloom in both spring and autumn; if it is in the temperate south, especially in the coastal areas, it will bloom brilliantly in spring, autumn and winter.

reason

Improper watering

If geraniums are watered too much, or if they are exposed to rain and the water is not drained in time, water will accumulate in the pot, causing rot and preventing the plant from blooming.

Improper fertilization

Excessive fertilization of geraniums, especially excessive nitrogen fertilizer, can easily cause the branches and leaves to grow too long, the flowers to not bloom or to bloom sparsely, and the flower quality to be poor. However, insufficient or no fertilization will also affect the normal growth and flowering of the plant. Therefore, more scale potassium fertilizer should be applied in early spring or early autumn.

Temperature discomfort

Temperature is also an important factor affecting geranium flowering. In winter, the room temperature is above 20℃, and coupled with poor ventilation, the branches and leaves tend to grow too long, which will affect flowering the following year. If the temperature is below 0℃ in winter, it is easy to be damaged by frost, and the leaf edges will turn yellow and become soft. Geraniums are sensitive to temperature changes. If the temperature drops or rises suddenly, the flowers will fall off.

Light discomfort

During the flowering period of geranium, it cannot accept strong light, especially direct sunlight at noon in summer. The leaf edges are prone to sunburn, resulting in poor growth or shedding of flowers and leaves. In addition, when caring for the plants indoors in winter and spring, if there is insufficient light for a long time, it can easily cause the plants to grow too tall without blooming, and even the flower buds that have formed will shrink and dry up due to insufficient light. Therefore, we should pay attention to providing more sufficient light in winter.

Too much pinching

Novice flower growers do not know how to prune and cut the geraniums into bald ones, resulting in very few leaves for a long time, delayed growth period, and few flowers and blooms. Therefore, pruning should be timely and appropriate. If you don't know how to prune, read How to Prune and Shape Geraniums to get a comprehensive understanding of pruning geraniums.

How to prolong flowering time

Temperature control

If you want to control the flowering destiny of geraniums, you need to understand the flowering needs of geraniums. Geraniums need to accumulate a certain amount of light to bloom, and the flowering time can be controlled by adjusting the light and temperature. After flowering in autumn, the plants should be moved to a lighted room in time, and the room temperature should be kept above 10℃ during the day and not lower than 5℃ at night to ensure that the geraniums continue to bloom until the following spring.

Do not prune

Geraniums should not be pruned before or after they bloom, especially if you want to extend their flowering period. Even if the geranium has dense branches and leaves when it blooms, you can rotate the flowerpot to ensure that all parts of the plant have sufficient sunlight, and then prune it after the flowers fall the following year.
