How to spend the winter on sunflowers and how to prune them in winter

1. How do sunflowers survive the winter?

The most important thing for sunflowers to safely overwinter is temperature. If you place sunflowers in a heated room in winter, then after normal maintenance for the winter, you can move the sunflowers out when the spring comes next year. If there is no indoor heating in winter and the temperature is low, a heavy pruning should be done before November every year, and then the pruned branches should be used for cuttings. This way there will be a warm period after November, which is just enough for the sunflowers to grow strong branches and leaves and safely overwinter.

When caring for sunflowers in winter, you should also place the potted plants in a warm place indoors and get more sunlight. When you lift the weight of the soil in the pot, you will feel that it has become noticeably lighter. Water them thoroughly but do not apply fertilizer. It should be noted that the way sunflowers survive the winter mentioned here refers to perennial sunflowers. Annual sunflowers can be reproduced by collecting seeds and sowing every year.

2. How to prune sunflowers in winter

Therefore, the best time to prune sunflowers in winter is before November 1st. If you shave and prune them before November 1st, and use the cut branches for cuttings, there will be exactly one month of warm period, which is enough for sunflowers to grow strong branches. If pruning is too late and the temperature is low, the sunflowers will not grow again after heavy pruning. If they are not pruned, the stems and leaves of the sunflowers will become old and it will not be easy for them to survive the winter.
