Diseases and Pests of Taxus and Their Control

Diseases of yew

During the growth process, yew may suffer from damping-off disease, stem rot, white rot and phytophthora. The most serious of these are stem rot and white rot. Yew is very prone to stem rot within two months of cuttings, especially when the weather is hot from July to August. Yew has a weaker heat tolerance and is more susceptible to stem rot infection. White rot usually occurs during the hot weather in July and August in summer, and the condition will improve after the weather gets cooler.

Prevention and Control of Taxus Diseases

When stem rot occurs in yew, sterilization should be carried out in time, fungicides should be sprayed, and the soil temperature should be lowered, otherwise the roots of the yew seedlings will be burned. In addition, fertilizers can be added to enhance the resistance of the yew seedlings. When white rot occurs in yew, it is necessary to do a good job in the management of the yew, including loosening the soil, weeding, fertilizing, etc. The diseased branches and leaves should be cleaned up in time to prevent secondary infection. Then, pentachloronitrobenzene should be mixed into the yellow heart soil and sprinkled on the diseased yew. This will cure the white rot of yew.

Pests of yew

The pests of yew are generally spider mites, aphids, scale insects, etc. Among them, aphids are the most harmful to yew. When the weather is mild, aphids are more likely to appear. Aphids will eat the roots and leaves of yew trees, seriously harming their growth, and even worse, causing the death of yew trees. We planted yew trees in a greenhouse where the temperature is very mild, making it easy for aphids to harm them.

Control of yew pests

We can consciously cultivate some natural enemies of aphids and use natural methods to prevent and control aphids. On the other hand, we can use pesticides and spray them to kill aphids.
