How to propagate Strelitzia reginae and how to make it grow side shoots

How to propagate Strelitzia reginae and how to make it grow side shoots

1. How to breed

1. Seed propagation: In nature, Strelitzia reginae is pollinated by hummingbirds to produce seeds, but this method cannot be used at home, so artificial pollination is needed to produce seeds. Ensure good pollination quality and then collect good seeds. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 4-5 days, then soak them in disinfectant solution for a few minutes. Then take them out and place them in a warm place with a temperature of about 25-30℃. They will germinate after a few days. Prepare suitable soil, then sow the seeds in it, and then plant them after the plants grow taller.

2. Propagation by division: The division of Strelitzia reginae should be carried out in conjunction with the spring repotting. First, select a strong mother plant with 5-6 healthy buds. Pour the plant out of the pot, cut the rhizome part with a knife, and divide it into several small plants, making sure each plant has several small buds. Apply wood ash on the cut, set it aside to dry slightly, and then prepare the soil before transplanting.

2. How to grow side shoots

If you want the Strelitzia to grow side buds, you need to repot it once every one or two years, and replace the soil with loose, breathable, and well-drained nutrient soil. Each time you repot it, you need to trim the roots appropriately. Provide plenty of sunlight, but avoid strong light. Pay attention to water and fertilizer management, water and fertilize regularly, but not excessively.
