What to do if Phalaenopsis root rots

How to Prevent Root Rot

First of all, when choosing the culture soil, the selection of the substrate must be strict, and it is necessary to ensure that the soil is loose, breathable and water-permeable. It is recommended to use peat mixed with perlite or peat mixed with pine needles, but it is also possible to use only moss. It is best to use organic fertilizer as base fertilizer.

Secondly, while ensuring that the soil in the pot is moist, water accumulation must not occur, as water accumulation is the biggest cause of root rot in plants. After watering, you should observe the potting soil carefully. If you find that the water is difficult to seep into the soil, it means that the density of the potting soil has increased with the increase of use time. The soil must be replaced in time to prevent root rot.

What to do after root rot

First, dig the soil out of the pot and loosen it, wash the roots of the plant with clean water, then cut off all rotten roots, and keep the intact parts as much as possible. The residual roots may also be saved.

Soak the cut ends and remaining roots in a 2% potassium permanganate solution for about 10 minutes and then let them dry. Then carefully apply wood ash to the cut ends and you can re-pot the plant.

The potting soil must be disinfected. A simple way is to pour boiling water through the potting soil and wait for it to cool before reusing it. When potting again, pat the rhizomes firmly, water them thoroughly and place them in a shaded place, cover them with a film, and cultivate them at a temperature of about 20 ℃. New roots will grow after about 20 days.
