How to transplant old leek roots

How to transplant old leek roots

Chives are native to China. They are rich in nutrients, spicy and delicious. Most importantly, chives are easy to grow, making them a veritable "lazy man's dish." Here I will introduce to you the method of transplanting old leek roots .

1. Transplanting time

The underground roots of leek are relatively cold-resistant and can be transplanted all year round as long as the soil is not frozen. March to October each year is a suitable transplanting period. It is best to transplant the leek roots in mid-September to mid-October in autumn. The roots will grow in winter and sprouts in spring, so that we don't miss the first crop of leeks.

2. Land preparation and fertilization

When transplanting leeks, you need to choose suitable soil, preferably soil with a deep soil layer, high organic matter content, and convenient drainage and irrigation. Leeks should not be planted in the same field as those previously planted with garlic, scallions, onions , shallots, and leeks. It is better to choose a good plot of land and combine it with land preparation, applying 3000 kg of fully decomposed farmyard manure and 40 kg of triple compound fertilizer as base fertilizer per mu, so that the leek will not age prematurely.

3. Watering the chive field

To transplant the leek roots and facilitate the removal of seedlings, we can water the leek field once 3 days before transplanting, then dig up the leek roots, and properly clean the roots to facilitate division. We can directly remove some seedlings that grow too weakly.

4. Root pruning

After digging up the leeks with their roots, you can cut the leek leaves and leave 3 to 5 centimeters. This will reduce water evaporation after transplanting and increase the survival rate of the leeks. In addition, we also need to cut off the ends of the leek's fibrous roots. This can promote the growth of new roots faster after the leek roots are transplanted, and can improve the growth of the leek.

5. Soak the roots in water

If the leek roots are transplanted more than 2 days after pruning, you can soak the leek roots in water for 5 hours before planting, which will facilitate germination.

6. Dip the roots

Transplanted leek roots often carry leek maggots, so before transplanting we can dip the roots in 1000 times diluted 50% chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate to effectively prevent and control leek maggots. If there is wood ash, we can sprinkle it in the transplanting trench. Wood ash can not only prevent and control leek maggots, but also add nutrients to leeks, which is beneficial to the healthy growth of leeks.

7. Planting

For planting leek roots, you can dig a 15 cm planting ditch with a row spacing of 30 cm, and place a leek root every 2 cm. It is best not to bury the leaf sheaths when cultivating the soil. Water it thoroughly after planting, and water it again 5 to 7 days after planting.
