How does Kalanchoe survive the winter? Can it be fertilized?

1. How does Kalanchoe survive the winter?

1. Increase the temperature: When growing Kalanchoe at home, make sure the maintenance temperature is above 5°C in winter, otherwise the leaves of the Kalanchoe will turn red and the flowering time will be delayed. If the temperature is lower, the Kalanchoe may even be frostbitten.

2. More light: The light in winter is warm and soft, so you must get more sunlight, which is conducive to the flowering of the plant. However, Kalanchoe is a short-day plant. If the Kalanchoe has not yet bloomed, you can expose the plant to the sun for 8 hours a day and shade it for the rest of the time to encourage it to bloom.

3. Water less: Winter is the flowering period of Kalanchoe. The plant should not be allowed to lack water, but it should not be watered too frequently either. You can weigh the weight of the soil in the pot at ordinary times. If it feels noticeably lighter, water it thoroughly. Keeping the soil dry before the Kalanchoe buds will also help the plant to bloom.

4. Frequent ventilation: The most fatal problem of growing Kalanchoe in winter is lack of ventilation. You must open windows frequently for ventilation when the temperature is highest at noon every day to prevent powdery mildew and various diseases and pests.

2. Can Kalanchoe be fertilized in winter?

Whether you can fertilize Kalanchoe in winter depends on the maintenance temperature and the condition of the plant. If the maintenance temperature is above 15℃, you can fertilize it. If the plant grows poorly, apply fertilizer with a balanced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. If the plant grows vigorously, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers once every half a month, and apply thin fertilizers frequently. If the maintenance temperature is above 15℃, or the Kalanchoe is in the flowering period, do not apply fertilizer.
