When is the best time to plant sticky corn?

Corn is a food that many of my friends like to eat. Some corn can be eaten raw, some corn can be made into various foods, some friends like sweet and crispy corn, and some friends like sweet and sticky corn. Let’s learn together when is the best time to plant glutinous corn?

When is the best time to plant sticky corn?

In the south, seeds are usually sown in March or April each year. In the north, sowing is generally carried out in April and May every year.

If spring glutinous corn is grown using mulch covering, it can be sown in February or March. Autumn glutinous corn is generally planted in July. Seedlings in greenhouses or greenhouses can be sown in late February.

Glutinous corn planting technology

1. Variety selection

You should choose glutinous corn varieties with short growth cycles, wide adaptability, strong disease resistance, neat and beautiful ear shapes, and excellent fresh taste. It is recommended to choose varieties such as the Yunuo series, Suyu series, and Jingkenuo series.

2. Planting density

It is recommended to carry out dense planting, with row spacing maintained at 1 meter, plant spacing (nest spacing) at 0.33 to 0.38 meters, using the method of two plants in one nest, and planting 3,500 to 4,000 plants per acre.

3. Germination direct seeding technology

In large-scale production, direct seeding technology is usually used. The sowing amount per mu is about 1 kg. After the seeds are soaked in advance for 2 to 3 hours, use a wet towel or wet sand to keep them moist to promote germination. They can be sown after the buds are exposed. Sow 2 to 3 germinated seeds in each nest. When sowing in autumn, due to the high temperature, the seeds germinate quickly, 3 to 5 days after sowing. The seedlings are transplanted 10 days after emergence, and 2 plants are retained in each nest.

4. Fertilization strategy

Before sowing, apply 1,000 kg of manure and 30 to 40 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer; apply 2 to 8 kg, 3 to 5 kg, and 6 to 10 kg of urea at the seedling stage, jointing stage, and heading stage respectively.

5. Pest and disease management

Compared with ordinary corn, sticky corn is more susceptible to serious damage from corn borers and armyworms, so special attention must be paid to prevention and control. Use 2.5% cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate or 20% cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate, dilute it to 1500 to 2000 times the liquid for spraying, which can achieve better prevention and control effects.

6. Harvest time:

The best time to harvest corn is 25 to 30 days after pollination, when the quality of fresh ears is best.

In short, the specific sowing time needs to be adjusted appropriately according to local climate conditions and weather conditions. For example, the best time to sow spring corn is when the air temperature or the soil temperature within 10 cm of the soil is no less than 10℃.
