When is the best time to plant honey plum?

When planting honey plums, you must choose good varieties, the stem thickness should not be less than 0.8cm, and the roots should be in intact condition. Most of the honey plum seedlings are planted in winter and spring, and the suitable planting time is January to February each year. It is best to plant them after the soil thaws and before the branches sprout.

How to grow honey plum?

1. Garden selection

When selecting a site for planting sugar plums, you should try to choose an area with relatively flat terrain, thick soil, good water and fertilizer conditions. The cultivated garden should be located in a low-lying area and should not be built in areas with poor drainage, inconvenient transportation or sticky soil. Honey plum is best cultivated in areas with an altitude of 500 to 1200 meters.

2. Planting

When planting honey plum, the row spacing and plant spacing are controlled at 4m and 3m respectively, and then the planting holes are dug, which are generally 0.6-0.8m. Before planting honey plum, you should first fill the pit with a mixture of decomposed organic fertilizer and topsoil, then fill in part of the topsoil after tamping it down with your feet, place the seedlings in the hole, tamp it down and water it. Usually each plant requires 10 to 20 kg of water to ensure that it is watered thoroughly. After the water seeps into the soil, cover it with a layer of fine soil, and then cover the tree pit with weeds or film. Depending on the weather conditions, water the seedlings once every 5 to 7 days, and water them 3 to 5 times in a row.

3. Topdressing

When the new shoots of honey plum are 15 to 20 cm in length, top dressing should be applied in time. Before July, nitrogen fertilizer should be the main fertilizer, and topdressing is needed once every 15 days, for 3 to 4 consecutive times. Each plant needs to be applied with about 50g of urea each time. For weak plants, they need to be fertilized 1 to 2 more times to help them catch up with strong trees as soon as possible, so that the tree vigor in the garden is at a similar level.

4. Pruning

Natural open heart shape and evacuated layered shape are often used. During the sapling stage, the focus is on cultivating the tree shape. The open-heart trunk height is set at 40 to 50 cm, and the main branch angle is controlled at 50 to 60 degrees. Light pruning is appropriate. During the growing period, the main focus is on pinching to control the vigorous growth of branches, increase branches, and rapidly expand the crown.

5. Disease and pest control

The main diseases and pests of honey plum include black spot disease, brown rot, red spot disease, gummosis, fruit borer, aphids, red spiders, armyworms, mulberry white scale, longhorn beetles , weevils, and stink bugs, etc. Prevention should be the main approach, with comprehensive control. Red spot disease, aphids and borer can be prevented and controlled by using 600 times diluted 80% mancozeb and 1500 times diluted 20% cypermethrin. Use 1000 times diluted 4.5% cypermethrin to control borer.
