Which month is best for planting garlic in the north?

Garlic is an important vegetable crop in China. It has both edible and medicinal value and high economic value. It is widely cultivated in all parts of China. So which month is the best for planting garlic in the north? Let’s learn more about it below.

Which month is best for planting garlic in the north?

It is generally suitable to plant garlic in autumn in the north. The best sowing period for garlic is between mid-to-late September and early October. At this time, the temperature gradually decreases, which is more suitable for garlic germination.

What are the key points in garlic planting?

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Before sowing garlic, deep plowing and fine harrowing should be carried out, and the land should be carefully prepared to make the bed surface level. Apply 5,000 kg of organic fertilizer , 50 kg of cake fertilizer, 50 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 30 kg of potassium sulfate fertilizer per mu. After the land is prepared, ditches and positive beds are made. The bed surface is 20-25 cm narrower than the ground film, and the ditch depth and width are 25 cm each.

2. Petal processing

Before sowing, the seed petals should be air-dried for 2-3 days. At the same time, the garlic seeds should be mixed to prevent diseases and pests. You can choose a seed dressing containing thiamethoxam or imidacloprid, and also add thiram and an appropriate amount of brassinolide.

3. Sowing method

There are two methods for sowing garlic: one is planting, which is to insert the seed petals into the soil, cover the soil after sowing and tamp it down; the other is furrow sowing, which is to use a hoe to dig a shallow furrow and sow the seed petals in the soil. After a furrow is dug, the soil dug out at the same time is covered on the previous row of seed petals. After sowing, cover the soil to a thickness of about 2 cm, tamp it lightly with your feet, and water it thoroughly. To prevent drought, cover the soil with a second layer of straw or other moisture-retaining materials.

4. Key points for sowing

The seeds should not be sown too deep and the soil should be kept moist to promote early germination. In addition, pay attention to reasonable density of planting. Generally, the row spacing of garlic cultivated in the open field should be 20cm and the plant spacing should be 7-8cm. The number of plants planted per mu is about 45,000, and the seed amount per mu is about 225kg. Early-maturing varieties are denser, while late-maturing varieties are sparser.

5. Field management

Garlic should be watered immediately after sowing, and then watered again after 5-6 days. After the seedlings have emerged, water them for the third time, and then cultivate and hoe them. Water once in winter, hoe and till the soil in time during the green period, and apply 2000-3000 kg of organic fertilizer and 30-40 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per mu. Water the garlic sprouts 3-4 times during the growing period to keep the soil moist.

In general, garlic in the north is suitable for sowing around National Day in autumn. Pay attention to mastering the management points before and after sowing, so as to lay a good foundation for increasing garlic production and income.
