How to fertilize plum trees? Which fertilizer is better?

In recent years, many friends have wanted to plant plum trees. Some plum varieties do have good market prospects. Plums are not only edible fresh, but also have medicinal value. They are considered a fruit tree with good economic value. Let’s learn how to fertilize plum trees. Which fertilizer is better?

1. Fertilization during the budding period

It should be carried out about 8 days before the plum tree sprouts, mainly using quick-acting fertilizer, 220-260 grams per plant, to promote germination and flowering. After fertilizing, water the plant once a day according to soil moisture conditions.

2. Fertilize after flowering

During the growth stage of young fruits and new shoots, apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer , about 220-280 grams per plant, to increase the fruit setting rate and promote the growth of young fruits. At the same time, pay attention to proper watering to maintain 50-60% of the soil's water holding capacity.

3. Spray foliar fertilizer during the fruit expansion period

During the stage from physiological fruit drop to fruit expansion, spray nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote rapid fruit expansion and improve yield and quality.

4. Base fertilizer

The base fertilizer is mainly slow-release farmyard manure, such as compost, manure, crop straw, green manure, fallen leaves, etc. It is best applied in autumn, 50-100 kilograms per adult plum tree.

5. Topdressing

Top dressing before flowering should be carried out about 10 days before the plum trees sprout, using nitrogen fertilizer or decomposed human feces and urine. After flowering, topdressing should be done in time with nitrogen and potassium fertilizers to reduce physiological fruit drop.

6. Fertilization method

When applying fertilizer, you can use radial trench method, circular trench method, hole digging method, vertical and horizontal trench method, etc. The trench depth is 20-30 cm and the width is 30-40 cm to facilitate root absorption.

7. Consider tree vigor and age

Weak plum trees should be given more nitrogen fertilizer, while younger trees should have their nitrogen fertilizer application reduced and their phosphorus and potassium fertilizers increased. Mature trees need to receive more fertilizer.

8. Soil and tree size considerations

Fertilize appropriately according to soil fertility and tree size, avoiding over- or under-fertilization.

10. Fertilization time

It is generally divided into three times: using base fertilizer after fruit picking, top dressing before and after flowering, and spraying foliar fertilizer during the fruit expansion period.

In short, scientific fertilization should be carried out according to the specific growth conditions and soil conditions of the plum tree to ensure the effective use of fertilizers.
