When is the best time to plant cherries?

Cherry is a common fruit and is loved for its beautiful appearance and sweet taste. If you plan to grow cherries , it is important to know the right time to plant them. So when is the best time to plant cherries? Let’s learn more about it below.

When is the best time to plant cherries?

When planting cherry seedlings, you should choose spring and autumn, usually March in spring and October in autumn. The temperature during these two periods is relatively stable, making it easier for the plants to survive after planting.

How to grow cherries?

1. Plot selection

The land for planting cherries should be located in a location that is sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, has fertile soil, good air permeability, good drainage and irrigation, and suitable acidity and alkalinity. In addition, since cherries are less cold-resistant, the temperature of the planting area should be kept above 15°C.

2. Planting with soil

After disinfecting the roots of the cherry seedlings, place them in the prepared soil, keeping the distance between each hole at about 40 cm. Add a small amount of farmyard manure and cover with soil to a thickness of about 2-3 cm. After watering it thoroughly, it is best to keep the soil moist.

3. Reasonable density planting

Planting density should vary depending on variety, rootstock and soil conditions. On fertile flat land, Chinese cherries are densely planted in a Y-shape, at 1×3 meters, with 220 plants per acre. If natural cluster or natural open-heart shapes are used, 2-3 meters × 3-4 meters can be used.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Cherries have high requirements for fertilizer and water. In addition to applying sufficient organic fertilizer in spring and autumn, they should be top-dressed with chemical fertilizer four times during the growing season. A good irrigation and drainage system should be established during the growing season to ensure timely irrigation during droughts and drainage during floods. The first watering should be done in early spring after thawing and before budding, combined with topdressing. Subsequent watering should be based on the weather and soil moisture conditions.

5. Pruning matters

(1) Pruning of young trees: Pruning of young trees is based on shaping, and the degree of pruning of various branches should be light, with pinching during the growth period as the main method. To control the vigorous growth of branches, increase branches, and accelerate the expansion of the crown.

(2) Fruit tree pruning: Pruning is usually carried out in summer after the fruit is harvested. Thinning is used to remove large perennial branches that are too dense and strong and disrupt the tree crown, adjust the crown structure, and promote the formation of flower buds.

In general, cherries are suitable for planting in spring and autumn. Of course, if you want to achieve high quality and high yield, you must master the correct planting methods and maintenance techniques. I hope the above guide points are helpful to you.
