How to deal with clematis in winter

How to deal with clematis in winter

1. Maintain temperature

Clematis is a very cold-resistant plant. Some ground-planted varieties can grow in an environment of minus 20 degrees Celsius, so for plants planted outdoors, generally no treatment is required. Potted plants can also be placed outdoors. If the temperature is very low, you can wrap them in plastic, foam, etc. to keep them warm. For clematis, if there is heating indoors, do not move it inside. The temperature is too high and it is not suitable for its growth.

2. Increase sunlight

Although clematis is very cold-resistant, it must be well-maintained in terms of sunlight. Moving it to a sunny place with good light and supplementing it with sufficient sunlight can promote its growth.

3. Control watering

The temperature is relatively low in winter and the plants will be in a dormant stage, so watering must be controlled. If you water too much, a large amount of water will accumulate in the pot, causing root rot and affecting normal growth. You can water it thoroughly before winter, and then water it according to the condition of the potting soil. Water it again when you find the soil is dry. The amount of water at one time should not be too much.

4. Reduce fertilization

It grows very slowly in winter and requires very little fertilizer. A small amount of fertilizer can be applied in winter, or no fertilizer can be applied.

5. Proper pruning

Winter is a good time for pruning, removing dead branches, rotten branches, weak branches, etc., which is conducive to growth in the next year.
