What kind of soil is better for growing succulents? How to make your own

1. What kind of soil is better for growing succulents?

Succulents are drought-resistant but afraid of waterlogging. When preparing the soil, generally two types of soil are used: peat soil and granular soil. The ratio between the two should be coordinated according to the age of the succulents. Usually, the smaller the succulents, the more peat soil is used, and vice versa.

1. Seedlings (leaf cuttings): For succulent seedlings or leaf cuttings, you must use a lot of peat soil when preparing the soil to ensure that the soil has sufficient nutrients so that the succulent seedlings can grow healthily. Generally, 50% peat soil and 50% granular soil are used (mix at will).

2. Large seedlings: For large succulent seedlings, that is, adult succulents, you must use more granular soil when preparing the soil to ensure that the soil is loose and breathable to prevent the succulents from growing too tall and rotting their roots. Generally, 30% peat soil and 70% granular soil are used (mix at will).

3. Old piles: For old piles of succulents, that is, aged succulents, more granular soil should be used when mixing the soil, and the size of the particles should also be larger to ensure that the soil is loose and breathable, and it can also play a role in controlling maintenance. Generally, 20% peat soil and 80% granular soil are used (mixed at will).

2. How to make your own succulent soil

Succulents do not require much soil, and usually buy ready-made ones. The granular soil includes volcanic rock, medical stone, chlorite, diatomaceous earth, etc. If you don’t want to buy it, you can make it yourself, such as breaking up red bricks and coal slag, soaking them in water to remove the alkali, and then taking them out and using them as granular soil.
