When is the best time to plant carrots?

Carrots are a kind of vegetable that many friends like to eat. Don’t think of carrots as being for feeding rabbits. In fact, carrots have very high nutritional value and you can eat them in moderation. Let’s learn together when is the best time to plant carrots?

When is the best time to plant carrots?

Carrots are semi-cold-resistant vegetables. The suitable temperature for germination is 20-25 degrees Celsius, the suitable temperature for growth is 18-23 degrees Celsius during the day and 13-18 degrees Celsius at night. In the lower temperatures of winter, the growth of carrots will be inhibited. The best time to plant carrots is usually spring and fall. The time for spring sowing is generally from February to March, and the time for autumn sowing is from July to September.

Common carrot pests and diseases and their control methods

1. Sclerotinia

This disease causes the fleshy roots to soften and develop water-soaked lesions, which then rot. Prevention and control methods include timely cleaning of fields, deep plowing of the soil, and spraying with 600-800 times diluted 80% mancozeb or 300-400 times diluted 25% carbendazim wettable powder .

2. Black spot

This is a disease caused by a fungus that primarily attacks leaves, petioles and stems. Prevention and control methods include using 50% thiram or benomyl at 0.3% of seed weight to mix the seeds, spraying 600 times diluted 70% benomyl wettable powder or 1500 times diluted 50% chlorpyrifos wettable powder at the early stage of the disease, spraying once every 10 days, and spraying continuously 2 to 3 times.

3. Black rot

This disease can occur throughout the growing season, mainly affecting leaves, petioles, stems and fleshy roots. The prevention and control methods are similar to those for black spot disease, and the same agents can be used for prevention and control.

4. Bacterial soft rot

This disease usually occurs in the early stages of growth, causing the fleshy roots to soften and rot. The prevention and control methods include spraying 4000 times diluted 72% agricultural streptomycin sulfate soluble powder or 500 times diluted 77% cypermethrin wettable powder, once every 10 days, for 2 to 3 consecutive times.

5. Root-knot nematode disease

This disease mainly harms the roots, causing tumors to form on the roots and affecting the growth of carrots. Prevention and control methods include crop rotation with gramineous crops, reducing the base population of pests and diseases, and using biological pesticides and high-efficiency, low-toxicity, low-residue pesticides for control.

6. Underground pests (such as cutworms, mole crickets, grubs, etc.)

These pests will eat the seedlings and roots, causing dead seedlings and broken ridges. Prevention and control methods include using fried wheat bran or bean cake mixed with 200g of 90% dichlorvos and water, and spreading it near the roots of seedlings in the evening to lure and kill the larvae.

7. Aphids

Aphids gather on the stems and leaves of plants and suck sap, causing the leaves to curl and become deformed. Prevention and control methods include using yellow boards to trap insects, light to trap insects, and spraying plant-based pesticides such as Bute and 1% azadirachtin emulsion.

8. Yellow striped flea beetle

The pest feeds on leaves, creating holes that can kill the plant in severe cases. Prevention and control methods include using sex attractants to lure and kill, protecting and releasing natural enemies (such as ladybugs, aphid wasps, etc.), and spraying chemical pesticides for prevention and control.

The above is an introduction to the planting time of carrots. In addition to mastering the planting timing, it is also important whether the planting location meets the growth conditions of carrots. The specific time can be adjusted appropriately according to local climate conditions and temperature.
