How to care for Amaryllis in winter

How to care for Amaryllis in winter

1. Keep warm

Amaryllis cannot withstand the cold in winter, so warming measures should be taken in time to prevent the plants from frostbite. The temperature in the south is relatively high, so plants planted in the ground can overwinter in the open air or be covered with straw to keep warm. As the temperature in northern regions drops, it is recommended to move the plant indoors and keep the temperature at around 10 degrees.

2. Control watering

Amaryllis grows relatively slowly in winter. The temperature is lower in winter and the evaporation rate of water is relatively slow, so you need to pay attention to controlling the water content. You only need to water it appropriately to keep the soil in the pot from being too dry and reduce the number of watering times. Do not water too much each time you water. Be careful to control the amount to prevent water accumulation in the pot soil and root rot. It may also cause the plant to grow too tall and affect normal dormancy.

3. Reduce fertilization

The demand for nutrients decreases in winter, so the amount of fertilizer needed is reduced. You can apply a small amount of fertilizer, but do not apply raw or concentrated fertilizer to prevent the roots from being burned.

4. Supplementary lighting

Amaryllis cannot grow without sunlight. The light in winter is relatively weak, so it needs more sunlight and more sun exposure. It can be placed on a balcony with good light.

5. Proper pruning

Amaryllis will hibernate in winter, and needs proper pruning at this time, cutting off dead branches, weak branches, diseased branches, and overgrown branches, and shortening excessively long branches appropriately.
