Celery Planting Time and Method

Celery Planting Time and Method

Root celery is one of the special vegetable varieties, also known as root celery. It is a kind of celery whose main edible part is the root. It is rich in nutritional value and also has certain medicinal value. Therefore, the prospects for its cultivation are very broad. So when and how to plant celery? Let’s learn more about it below.

When to plant celery

The main planting time for celery is spring and autumn. Among them, the spring planting time is from February to March, mainly in greenhouses for seedling cultivation, then transplanting at the end of April, and harvesting begins at the end of August; while the autumn cultivation is from mid-June to mid-July for sowing and seedling cultivation, transplanting from late August to early September, and harvesting from late October to early to mid-November.

How to grow celery

1. Land preparation and fertilization

4,000 to 5,000 kilograms of decomposed organic fertilizer , 30 kilograms of superphosphate and 10 kilograms of potassium sulfate should be applied per acre of land. Land preparation should be carried out in conjunction with fertilization. After ploughing, the land should be carefully harrowed and leveled to make ridges. One move can make a flat ridge about 1.5 meters wide and 8 meters long for sowing.

2. Seed treatment

Generally, the seeds need to be germinated first. Soak the seeds in warm water at about 30 degrees for 24 hours. After soaking, drain the seeds and wash the mucus on the surface of the seeds with clean water. Wrap the seeds with wet gauze and put them in 20-25 degrees for germination.

3. Sowing and seedling raising

Before sowing, water the seedbed thoroughly and sow the seeds after the water has seeped in. The seed rate is 15 kg per hectare. After sowing, cover with fine soil 0.5 cm thick. After sowing, immediately cover with plastic film to increase the temperature of the seedbed. Keep the temperature around 20℃ during the day and around 15℃ at night to promote rapid germination.

4. Transplanting and planting

About 60 days after sowing, when the seedlings grow six or seven leaves, they can be transplanted and planted. When planting, you should dig the seedlings carefully to prevent root damage, and try to transplant them with soil to facilitate root recovery and seedling survival.

5. Strengthen management

After transplanting and the seedlings have grown, keep the soil moist and loosen the soil in time to retain moisture to promote the growth of the seedlings. Before the hot and rainy season, a strong individual plant type will be formed, creating an overall shading, ventilation, and cooling group effect.

In general, the cultivation of celery is basically the same as that of celery, and you just need to pay attention to some detailed management work. Generally speaking, if planted properly, the yield per mu can reach more than 2,000 kilograms, and the planting benefits are also very considerable.
