Bougainvillea fertilization method and time, what fertilizer is best

Bougainvillea fertilization method and time, what fertilizer is best

1. Fertilization method

1. Base fertilizer: Whether you are growing bougainvillea in a potted plant or planting it in the ground, you should add enough base fertilizer to the soil during planting. In general, you can use bone meal, chicken manure or eggshells. Do not use chemical fertilizers as they can easily burn the roots.

2. Top dressing: When applying fertilizer, do not apply it at the root system. You can dilute it with water and apply it along the edge of the flower pot. If you get too close to its roots, you will burn its root system.

2. Fertilization time

It needs regular topdressing during its vigorous growth period, generally once every 7-10 days. In spring and early summer, fertilization should be done well. In autumn, it is usually necessary to control fertilization slightly, and fertilizer can be applied once every half a month or so. It will grow very slowly in winter, and applying appropriate compound fertilizer can help it survive the winter. Fertilization should be done when the soil in the pot is dry. Do not apply fertilizer when the temperature is too high, especially when the sun is strong at noon. Try to avoid it.

3. What kind of fertilizer is best?

During the growing period, mainly nitrogen fertilizer is applied, and before the flowering period, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are applied, which will help it bloom more. It is better to apply natural fertilizers for daily maintenance, such as decomposed fruit peel fertilizer, beer water, rice water, or organic fertilizer. If you want to apply chemical fertilizers, you should be careful about how you apply them and not apply them close to the plant's roots.
