Is lavender a flower? What does a lavender flower look like?

1. Is it a flower?

Lavender is of course a flower. It is a shrub of the genus Lavandula in the family Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean coast and is distributed throughout Europe. It is also cultivated in the Tianshan Mountains in my country. This plant has beautiful leaves and flowers, high ornamental value, and is also very cold-resistant. In addition, the whole plant has a fragrance, and there are oil glands on the hairs, which can also emit fragrance when broken by touch.

2. What kind of flowers

Lavender flowers are in cymes, which usually contain 6-10 flowers. The flowers are clustered at the top of the branches, forming a spike shape. Its peduncle is long and hairy. The bracts are oval and rust-colored when dry. The pedicels are short, blue in color, and have gray hairs. The calyx is tubular and the corolla is two-lipped. The upper lip has two lobes, the lobes are large and mostly round, and the lower lip has three lobes, the lobes are smaller.

3. Growth habits

Lavender is very adaptable. For adult plants, they can withstand high temperatures of 40°C and overwinter in the open air at low temperatures of -21°C. Even seedlings can withstand a climate of -10°C. However, it is still suitable for growing in warm places. The branches of the plant will develop when the temperature is above 12℃, buds will appear when the temperature is above 16℃, and it will bloom when the temperature exceeds 20℃.

4. How to raise

Lavender needs to be grown in a place with sufficient light. Humidity and darkness are not conducive to the growth of the plant. It is not advisable to water too much at normal times. You can provide sufficient water during the growing period, and control the water at other times. Fertilization is needed before the plant blooms and after the flowers fade. Fertilization before flowering can promote flowering, while fertilization after flowering can supplement nutrients.
