Planting and management methods of roxburghii

Seabuckthorn is a very important wild resource with relatively high nutritional value. It is a nutritious and precious fruit that nourishes and strengthens the body. The demand for it is very large, and it is artificially cultivated in many areas. Here are some tips on planting and managing sea buckthorn.

1. Soil management

The sapling stage is 1 to 3 years after the sea buckthorn is planted, and it usually only needs to be nurtured twice a year. During the period of nurturing, the first period is from May to June, and the second period is from September to October. Generally, the method of cutting with knife and hoe is adopted, and the specification is 60x60 cm. You can plant some crops such as soybeans and peppers in the middle. It is strictly forbidden to use herbicides . When managing the soil for adult trees over 3 years old, you can deeply turn the soil over to improve the soil.

2. Fertilization management

The growth of sea buckthorn has a high demand for nutrients. Generally speaking, it needs to be fertilized at least three times a year. Among them, base fertilizer is applied once in winter, mainly decomposed farm organic fertilizer , and base fertilizer is generally applied before November. After applying base fertilizer, topdressing should be done 2 to 3 times each year during the vigorous growth season of sea buckthorn. The first time is before the sea buckthorn shoots out, around February, when nitrogen fertilizer is applied once to promote the shoots of the sea buckthorn and accelerate the growth rate. In June and July, the growth of sea buckthorn enters its peak period, and it needs to be fertilized 1 to 2 times according to the nutrient supply, mainly with compound fertilizer.

3. Water management

Because the roots of sea buckthorn are shallow, it has low resistance to drought. It needs to be watered in time when drought occurs, otherwise it will have an adverse effect on the growth of sea buckthorn. It is generally advisable to keep the soil moist but without water accumulation in the garden. If the rainfall is too heavy in summer, timely drainage and irrigation are needed. Long-term waterlogging will cause the roots of the sea buckthorn to rot and die, and may also cause diseases and insect pests.

4. Pruning management

The tree shape and crown structure of sea buckthorn are natural clumping shapes. The crown has no main trunk. There are 8 to 10 main branches growing from the base, which grow obliquely or upright, forming a natural clumping round-headed crown. Therefore, pruning is generally done from November to December. During the pruning process, the main focus is on pruning diseased and insect-infested branches, dead branches, crossed branches, and drooping branches, leaving as many relatively robust branches as possible as fruiting branches.

5. Pest and disease control

Common diseases of sea buckthorn include powdery mildew, leaf scorch, canker, black spot, etc. Common insect pests include sawflies, rose sawflies, scale insects, aphids, and borer. For diseases and insect pests of sea buckthorn, the principle of prevention first and treatment second should be adopted. Some diseased and insect-infested branches are pruned, and all the cleared weeds and diseased and insect-infested branches are taken out of the sea buckthorn orchard for centralized burning. In order to achieve good disease and insect pest control effects in the sea buckthorn orchard, spray 5 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture on the pruned sea buckthorn trees once.
