How do southern grapevines survive the winter? What preparations should be made for the winter?

1. Pruning

Pruning should be done in the second week after leaf fall. Cutting some branches short can reduce nutrient consumption and improve its cold resistance. At this time, pruning mainly involves cutting off branches that are infested with insects, diseases, and weak growth, leaving only healthy and strong branches. It is also necessary to retain suitable buds to ensure better growth next year. In addition, be sure to clean up the pruned branches in a timely manner and not leave them in the orchard.

2. Watering

After completing pruning, you need to water the plants, that is, water them with freezing water. Note that watering should be done 10 days before burying the soil, not too early. There are two purposes of watering. One is to ensure soil moisture and the other is to increase soil temperature to prevent roots from freezing. Second, it can avoid drought in early spring. At this time, water thoroughly and sufficiently to ensure that the soil is in a saturated state.

3. Bury the soil

After watering, wait until the soil is slightly dry before burying it. Remove the branches, tie them together, press them down, and cover them with soil for the first time. It doesn't need to be too thick the first time, just enough to cover its branches. It is fine to complete it before the second freezing. At this time, you need to bury it deeper. The specific depth depends on the climate. The lower the temperature, the deeper it is. You can also cover it with a layer of hay to keep out the cold. Be careful to keep away from the roots when taking soil to avoid damaging the roots.
