Planting time and method of yellow sprouts

Planting time and method of yellow sprouts

Yellow sprouts is an old name for Chinese cabbage , and is a more typical "indigenous name". Because its heart is yellow, it has a similar name in some areas. So what is the planting time and method of yellow sprouts? Let’s learn more about it below.

Planting time of yellow sprouts

Yellow sprouts are mainly planted in autumn. According to its different varieties, the sowing time can be divided into: early-maturing varieties are sown in early and mid-August, medium-late-maturing varieties are sown in late August to early September, and late-maturing varieties are best sown in late August.

How to plant yellow sprouts

1. Selecting improved varieties

It is best if the seeds are fresh, shiny and plump, so that the germination rate will be higher and the growth will be stronger. At the same time, select suitable yellow sprout varieties according to local conditions.

2. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose sandy loam or loam plots that are rich in organic matter, loose and fertile to grow yellow sprouts. Deeply plow the land before sowing. Combined with land preparation, apply 3000-4000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 50-70 kg of compound fertilizer per mu of land. After evenly applying the fertilizer, perform rotary tillage and ridge formation.

3. Seed treatment

To improve seed germination potential, the seeds can be dried for 2 to 3 days before sowing. Then soak the seeds in warm water to prevent them from being infected with bacteria. The specific method is to first soak the seeds in cold water for 10 minutes, then soak them in warm water at 50-54℃ for 30 minutes, immediately move them into cold water to cool, then take them out and place them in a ventilated place to dry before sowing.

4. Planting method

There are two methods: direct seeding and seedling transplanting, which generally depend on the harvest time of the previous crop. If the previous crop was harvested early and the land can be prepared and bedded in time, direct seeding can be used; otherwise, seedling raising and transplanting should be used. Direct sowing is 5-6 days later than seedling transplanting.

There are two general cultivation modes for growing Chinese cabbage: high ridges and flat beds. Generally, one row is planted in each high ridge, and the ridge height is 12-15 cm; two rows are planted in each flat bed, and the width of the bed depends on the variety. There are two methods of live broadcasting: hole broadcasting and strip broadcasting. Hole sowing is to dig holes within the row or on the top of the ridge at a certain plant spacing. The row spacing for early-maturing varieties is 55-60 cm; for row sowing, 5-10 cm deep furrows are dug according to the row spacing. Water is first poured along the furrows. After the water has seeped in, the seeds are evenly spread in the furrows and covered with 0.8-1 cm thick fine soil.

Generally speaking, yellow sprouts are not a variety of vegetables . It is just a name for cabbage in ancient times, an old name. Therefore, the planting time and method can be carried out according to normal cabbage planting techniques.
