Which month is suitable for sowing garlic seedlings?

Which month is suitable for sowing garlic seedlings?

Garlic sprouts are very adaptable vegetables , and you must master the timing and method when planting them. If garlic sprouts are sown too early and encounter high temperatures, they may grow too fast and their quality may decline. If the sowing time is too late, the yield and taste of the garlic sprouts may be affected. So when is the best month to sow garlic seedlings? Let’s take a look with the editor below.

1. Which month is suitable for sowing garlic seedlings?

1. Northern Region

The climate in the northern region is relatively cold, with lower temperatures in autumn and winter, so the planting time of garlic seedlings may be a little later. In Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong and other places, the best time to sow garlic seedlings is usually from mid-to-late September to mid-to-early October. The temperature during this period is moderate, which is conducive to the rooting, germination and subsequent growth of garlic seedlings.

2. Southern China

The climate in the south is warm and the winter is not as cold as in the north, so the planting time of garlic sprouts is relatively flexible. In Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei and other places, the best time to sow garlic seedlings is usually from late August to early September, but it can also be advanced or delayed according to actual conditions. In some more southern regions, such as Guangdong and Guangxi, due to the warmer climate, the sowing time of garlic seedlings may be earlier, for example, sowing in late July to mid-August is also feasible.

2. Sowing method of garlic sprouts

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Garlic sprouts do not have high requirements for soil and can be planted in all kinds of soil. However, in order to obtain better yield and quality, it is recommended to choose fertile, loose and well-drained soil for planting. Before sowing, the soil needs to be deeply tilled and sufficient base fertilizer applied. The base fertilizer can be decomposed farmyard manure, compound fertilizer , etc. About 3000-4000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure can be applied per mu of land.

2. Seed selection

The requirements for garlic seeds in garlic seedling cultivation are not strict, and generally normal garlic cloves can be used. The garlic cloves must be plump, free of pests and diseases, and have no surface damage. In order to obtain uniform seedlings and facilitate management, garlic cloves can be planted separately according to their size.

3. Planting seeds

When sowing garlic seedlings, first dig furrows in the bed. The depth of the furrows is about 3 cm, the width is about 13 cm, and the furrow spacing is about 35 cm. Then plant in single rows with a row spacing of about 18 cm and a plant spacing of 45 cm, or plant two rows in each furrow, with the row and plant spacing also maintained at 45 cm. After sowing, cover the soil with 12 cm thickness, then tamp it down and water it in time. 200-250 kg of seeds are required per acre of land.

4. Watering

After sowing the garlic seedlings, water them sufficiently to allow them to take root and promote germination and emergence. After the seedlings emerge, water them in time to keep the soil moist and promote the growth of the seedlings. Watering should be carried out together with soil cultivation to prevent the soil from becoming compacted and dry.

5. Fertilization

After the garlic seedlings emerge, apply manure water or fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate along with the water to promote the growth of the seedlings. Before harvesting, quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to improve the quality and yield of garlic sprouts. If the garlic seedlings are not harvested in the same year and are prepared to be put on the market the following year, they need to be watered and fertilized before wintering. They can be covered with straw or a small arch shed with straw thatch to overwinter.

The above is an introduction to the appropriate months for sowing garlic sprouts. In the Yangtze River Basin and areas to its south, mid-to-late September is a more suitable time to sow garlic sprouts. In the northern regions, February to April in spring and September to November in autumn are the main planting times for garlic seedlings.
