How to prune lilies after they have finished blooming

How to prune lilies after they have finished blooming

1. Cut off the remaining flowers

When most of the lilies have bloomed, there are some withered flowers left on the lilies. These flowers need to be cut off in time. If they are not cut off, leaving them on the plant will not only be unsightly, but will also consume the nutrients of the plant itself. Flowering consumes a lot of nutrients, and these remaining flowers continue to absorb them, resulting in a decrease in the number of flowers in the next year. If they are left on the plant, they may wither and rot, affecting the plant itself.

2. Pruning branches

After the flowers have finished blooming, not only should the withered flowers be pruned, but the branches that have bloomed also need to be cut off. Removing the flower branches and leaving the stems can greatly reduce nutrient consumption and help store the remaining nutrients in the plant. The bulb part can also grow and develop better, which is beneficial for the growth and flowering in the coming year and helps the lily grow better.

3. Remove dead branches

After the flowering period, the temperature will gradually drop, and the branches and leaves on the potting soil will gradually wither. These withered branches and leaves can be cut off from the base. It is meaningless to keep these branches and leaves. After pruning, take out the bulbs inside and place them in sandy soil over the winter, and then plant them in the spring of next year.
