The effect and acceleration of the drying and lignification of succulent roots

The effect and acceleration of the drying and lignification of succulent roots

1. Function

1. After more than a year of cultivation, the roots of succulents begin to dry up and may become lignified. The stems turn brown and feel hard. This is normal and does not mean black rot has occurred. The process of lignification is that the lignin produced in the cells is gradually deposited. After lignification, the stems and roots will be stronger, ensuring that they will not be broken and can support the gradually heavier upper part.

2. After lignification, the cell wall loses its elasticity, and the cells inside will not absorb water and become swollen, thus avoiding excessive growth in the later stage.

2. Acceleration Methods

1. Get more sunlight: The roots of succulents become lignified, which has many benefits and can be conducive to the formation of old stumps. If you want to promote root lignification as soon as possible, you need to get more sunlight and ensure good light. Succulents that lack sunlight are difficult to form lignification. However, summer is special because the intensity of sunlight is relatively high and you should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

2. Reduce nitrogen fertilizer: Reasonable fertilization is needed during the growth process. If the soil is rich in nitrogen, it will affect the synthesis of lignin. Therefore, in order to promote lignification of the roots as soon as possible, it is necessary to reduce the application of nitrogen fertilizer.
