How to take cuttings of Dendrobium

How to take cuttings of Dendrobium

1. Time Selection

The best time for cuttings is in spring or summer, around May to June. The temperature during this period is just right, and the surrounding air humidity is high, so the cuttings are easy to survive. Other seasons are not impossible, but the survival rate is not likely to be high at this time.

2. Cut off the branches

If you want to cut branches, you must first choose a good plant. Select a relatively healthy plant that is at least three years old. Branches from such a mother plant can increase the survival rate. Cut 1-2 year old branches from it. They should be fuller and look relatively sturdy, about 15-25 cm in length, and then cut into several stem segments, retaining the growth point on each and discarding the leaves at the bottom.

3. Prepare the matrix

For it, the substrate cannot be ordinary soil, because the permeability is not high, and it is easy to cause rot when inserted. You can use vermiculite, river sand, or a mixture of sphagnum moss, bark, etc. The first prerequisite is air permeability. Add enough water into it to ensure a good water content.

4. Take cuttings

Insert the cut stem segment into the plant. It doesn’t need to be too deep, as long as it can prevent it from falling over. During this period, spray water on the plant normally. Wait until white aerial roots grow on it, which means the plant’s growth is stable and can be transplanted.
