Kiwifruit grafting time and method

Kiwifruit grafting time and method

1. Grafting time

Kiwifruit grafting can be done in spring, preferably in February or March, to ensure that the juice inside does not flow out before the wound exudation period, which can increase the chance of survival. If you miss this period, you can choose early April, when the climate is also suitable and the survival rate is higher. June and July are also the grafting period, when the humidity is high, which is conducive to healing between the two. Different places can choose the appropriate grafting time according to local climatic conditions.

2. Grafting method

1. Scion and rootstock: When cutting scion, you must first select plants of pure varieties, which should be strong, in good growth condition, and free of diseases and insect pests. The rootstock you choose should be sturdy, with solid roots, good adaptability, and a diameter of about 0.5-1.5 cm.

2. Start grafting: There are three commonly used grafting methods, namely single bud branch cut grafting, single bud branch belly grafting, and single bud piece belly grafting. These three methods have advantages and disadvantages. The first is to cut a full bud, then cut it flat on the rootstock, and then cut vertically downwards, and insert the bud at the incision. The second method is to cut off the branch with buds, cut the rootstock downwards, and then insert the branch. The third method is to cut longitudinally from above the bud, take out the bud piece, and then embed it into the cut of the rootstock.
