Cutting method of Begonia thornii

Cutting method of Begonia thornii

1. Cutting time

Begonia can be propagated by cuttings during the growing season, but the survival rate is higher in May and June. The temperature is low in winter, and it is difficult for cuttings to survive. High temperatures in summer can cause bottom rot and a very low survival rate. Generally, cuttings can be taken when the temperature is between 15-30℃.

2. Cuttings processing

Choose a strong, pest-free, and disease-free hollyhock plant. Cut a 10-15 cm branch with 3-4 leaf nodes. Wipe off the white pulp that flows out of the cut, and then apply wood ash. Put it in a cool place to dry for 2-3 days, and it can be used for cuttings after the wound is dry.

3. Pot soil preparation

The requirements of the substrate for the iron hibiscus are not high. Just use river sand or peat soil, and then change to new soil after it takes root. You can also use nutrient soil directly, which is more conducive to rooting and germination. It should be noted that the substrate should not be sand or sea sand from saline-alkali areas, as salt and alkali content are not conducive to its growth.

4. Cutting maintenance

After preparing the potting soil, you can start cuttings. Poke a hole in the soil surface, about 5 cm deep. Insert the bottom of the cutting into the hole, water it thoroughly and place it in a cool place. After that, you must pay attention to controlling the water and wait until the soil in the pot is slightly dry before watering again. It will take about 50-60 days for the seeds to take root.
