The correct way to grow succulents

There are many types of succulents with different forms, leaf shapes and plant types. Compared with other potted flowers and plants, succulents are usually smaller in size and are very suitable for planting in small pots. Let’s learn the correct way to grow succulents.

1. Choose the right soil

Succulents need loose, breathable and well-drained soil. It is recommended to mix peat soil, perlite, vermiculite and medical stone , and the proportion can be adjusted according to actual conditions. This kind of soil can ensure good air permeability and provide sufficient nutrients.

2. Water properly

Succulents are drought-tolerant, and overwatering can easily lead to root rot. It is recommended to adopt the "watering when dry and watering when wet" method, that is, water thoroughly after the soil is completely dry. When watering, avoid getting water on the leaves as this may cause rot and mold growth. During the dormant period, reduce the frequency of watering appropriately.

3. Adequate lighting

Succulents like light, and sufficient sunlight helps the leaves to color and grow healthily. With the exception of a few varieties, most succulents need at least six hours of light per day. During the high temperatures in summer, appropriate shade is needed to avoid sunburn.

4. Suitable temperature

Succulent plants are suitable for growing in a warm environment. They can be grown outdoors all year round in the south, but need to be moved indoors in the north in winter. It is ideal to keep the temperature between 15℃-25℃.

5. Proper fertilization

Succulent plants need to be fertilized in appropriate amounts during their growth period, generally 1-2 times a month is sufficient. It is recommended to use special fertilizers for succulents and avoid excessive fertilization.

6. Keep ventilation

Good ventilation conditions are essential for the growth of succulents. Avoid storing succulents in enclosed environments, such as closed glass cabinets or plastic bags. Ventilation can reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

7. Prevent and control pests and diseases

Succulents may be attacked by pests and diseases such as aphids and powdery mildew. When pests and diseases are found, they should be dealt with in a timely manner. Pesticides or physical methods can be used for prevention and control.

8. Regular pruning and soil changes

Regularly pruning yellow or diseased leaves will help the plant grow healthily. At the same time, it is recommended to replace the soil once a year to maintain soil fertility and air permeability.

The above are the cultivation techniques for succulents. In addition, succulents can be propagated through division, leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, etc. Leaf cuttings and stem cuttings are suitable for beginners, as they are simple to operate and have a high success rate.
