How to grow red sage in spring

How to grow red sage in spring

1. Watering

The plant grows faster in spring. Salvia likes moisture, so you must ensure that the soil is moist enough for it to grow healthily. The temperature difference in spring is quite large, so watering is needed according to the temperature conditions. If the temperature is above 15 degrees, water it every other day. If the temperature is below 15 degrees, water it two to three times a week. Do not use freshly connected tap water for watering. The tap water must be air-dried for two or three days before use, because freshly connected tap water contains chlorine, which will affect the growth of its roots.

2. Pruning

In order to prevent the main branches from growing too tall, it is necessary to top them, that is, remove the tops of the main branches. The purpose of doing this is to ensure a balanced supply and demand of nutrients and to stimulate the germination and growth of side branches. Topping should be done every two weeks in spring, for a total of three times. Be careful when watering after each fertilization. Do not water on the cut, as this may cause infection.

3. Fertilization

It consumes a lot of nutrients in spring, and the nutrients in the soil alone cannot meet its needs. At this time, you should use fertilizer gently, because it has just passed the dormant period and its ability to absorb nutrients has not yet fully recovered. Fertilizers with strong effects will not only fail to absorb it, but will also cause fertilizer damage. Fertilizer should be used two to three times a month, and each time it should be diluted before use.
