Cultivation methods and precautions of daffodils

Daffodil is a popular flower that many people grow at home. The fragrance it emits when it blooms is refreshing. However, some people may encounter some problems during the maintenance process, such as daffodils not blooming or even root rot, and eventually they can only discard them helplessly. Let’s learn about the cultivation methods and precautions of daffodils.

1. Choose the maintenance method

First, you need to decide which method to use to care for daffodils. Daffodils can be grown in soil or in water. However, hydroponics has become the choice of more people because it is clean, convenient, and allows intuitive observation of root growth. Compared with soil cultivation, hydroponics does not require worrying about water control and is more suitable for home use.

2. Choose high-quality flower balls

If you want daffodils to bloom with beautiful flowers and rich fragrance, choosing high-quality flower bulbs is the key. If the quality of the flower bulb itself is poor, it will be difficult to produce ideal flowers even with the best maintenance methods. Some inferior flower balls are small and weak, and are prone to the "dumb flower" phenomenon, that is, they do not bloom.

When choosing flower bulbs, be sure to identify them carefully. High-quality daffodil bulbs have a full, strong appearance, a slightly flattened shape, and more small bulbs around the main bulb. When you pinch the flower ball with your hands, it should feel firm, indicating that it has sufficient moisture inside, rather than being dry and withered. Such flower balls are more likely to bloom later.

3. Flower ball processing

After buying the flower bulb, you cannot put it directly into the pot. If the flower ball has not yet sprouted, it needs to be processed first to promote its germination and growth. The specific operation is as follows: first clean the flower ball, and then peel off the brown film on the surface of the bulb. Next, use a knife to gently make two cross-shaped cuts on the top of the flower ball. Be careful not to cut too deep to avoid damaging the internal tissue. After that, soak the flower balls in the diluted fungicide solution for 10 minutes, take them out and place them in a ventilated place to dry.

This treatment process can stimulate the flower bulbs to germinate faster. If the flower ball has already grown buds, this step can be omitted. It should be noted that after the incision, the wound must be treated with a disinfectant to prevent infection, and make sure it is dry before proceeding with subsequent operations.

4. Flower ball into the pot

There are also some details to pay attention to when placing the flower ball in the pot. Daffodils do not grow directly from the water in the pot, but absorb water through their roots and store it in the flower bulb for growth. Therefore, the flower ball cannot be completely submerged in water when placing it in the pot. The correct way is to put the flower ball into the pot and then add water to one-third of the flower ball.

When choosing a pot, it is best to match the size of the pot mouth with the size of the flower ball so as to better fix the flower ball. If the mouth of the pot is too large, you can add some small stones or pebbles into the pot to fix the flower ball and prevent it from falling over.

5. Reasonable supplement of water and fertilizer

The maintenance of hydroponic daffodils is relatively simple, because the reduction of water can be directly observed, and you just need to replenish it in time. As for fertilization, you can use a special nutrient solution. Depending on the growth of the daffodils, add nutrient solution every 1-2 weeks to avoid root burn caused by excessive fertilization.

6. Control temperature and light

Like other plants, daffodils need suitable temperature and light conditions to grow. Daffodils are relatively cold-resistant, but the most suitable growth temperature is 10℃-18℃, which is an easy temperature range to achieve indoors.

Daffodils need about 6 hours of light every day to promote their healthy growth. Adequate light can make the stems of daffodils thick and the leaves dark green. If placed in a diffused light location indoors for a long time, daffodils will tend to grow too tall, their stems will become thin and weak, and their flowering will be affected.

The above are the key points for caring for daffodils. I hope that everyone can refer to these methods based on actual conditions during the maintenance process so that the daffodils can bloom beautiful flowers.
