How to propagate hydrangeas by cutting

How to propagate hydrangeas by cutting

1. Cuttings

Select a thicker branch from the mother plant and cut it off. The length should be about 15 cm. It is best to use dark green and somewhat hard branches that are cut close to the root system. There are also requirements for the time of pruning. Try to prune in the morning when the branches have sufficient water.

2. Pruning branches

Cut off all the leaves on the lower part of the branch and keep the top 2-3 leaves. If the leaves are not trimmed, it will consume more nutrients and water, which is not conducive to its rooting. The lower end of the branch should be cut obliquely, preferably at a 45° angle.

3. Prepare the matrix

Prepare the substrate for cuttings in advance. You can use peat soil, perlite or vermiculite and use it in a 1:1 ratio. Disinfection is required before cuttings, because if there are bacteria in the soil, the cuttings will be harmed and rooting will be affected.

4. Take cuttings

After trimming the bottom leaves, it is best to wait for a while before continuing. You should wait until the cut site of the cuttings becomes dry before you can plant them. Dig a small hole in the substrate and insert the processed cuttings into the substrate. The top leaves should not be too close to the substrate to prevent the leaves from becoming infected and rotting. Just keep it moist and away from strong light until it takes root.
