How to propagate hydrangeas by cuttings

How to propagate hydrangeas by cuttings

It is not difficult to propagate hydrangeas by cuttings. As long as you make good preparations for the cuttings, you can increase the success rate. When choosing branches for cuttings, you can choose strong and non-woody branches, and then make a bevel cut at the end of the cut branches. It is best to cut off about half of the remaining leaves, because too many leaves will increase water evaporation.

Hydrangea cutting time

There are two best times for hydrangea cuttings, namely at the turn of spring and summer or in autumn. During these two times, the overall environmental temperature is more suitable and the climate is relatively cool. If you carry out cutting propagation at this time, the new seedlings that grow can store a lot of nutrients and can bloom in the spring of the following year.

How to take hydrangea cuttings

If you want to have a high survival rate for hydrangea cuttings, you must prepare loose and fertile sandy soil as its growth medium. Then remember to sterilize the soil with carbendazim and potassium permanganate before cuttings to avoid bacteria infecting the plants, which can increase the survival rate.

Rooting hydrangea cuttings

If you want hydrangea to take root quickly after cuttings, you must pay attention to light control. Do not expose it to the sun for a short time after cuttings, so as not to wilt the leaves, which will also affect root growth. Usually, just give it a little scattered light, or place it on the shady side of the balcony, which will help it take root quickly.
