What soil is best for growing cactus?

The growth characteristic of cactus is that it likes loose, fertile and breathable soil. Because cactus is a plant that grows in the desert, it is extremely drought-resistant. Therefore, it also needs the soil to have good drainage function. If you are not careful enough when choosing the soil for it, it may cause its roots to grow slowly or even cause root rot.

Cactus soil

The soil for cactus should be able to promote the extension and growth of the cactus's roots, so you can choose Akadama, coal ash, coarse sand, etc. as the soil for cultivating it. Among them, Akadama does not contain bacteria and the particles are not large, so it can be spread on the bottom of the cactus pot. Coal ash is alkaline, and its porous structure makes it extremely breathable. It is also rich in various trace elements. Coarse sand has no edges and is relatively clean. Just remember to sieve it before use.

Cactus soil preparation method

1. Leaf mold + garden soil + perlite

You can choose these three types of soil and mix them evenly in a ratio of 5:3:2. Put gravel at the bottom of the pot before use to increase the drainage function.

2. Peat soil + garden soil + fine sand + vermiculite

Mixing these four types of soil in a ratio of 4:4:1:1 can ensure that the soil for the cactus is loose enough.

3. Garden soil + leaf humus + coarse sand

These three materials can be prepared in a ratio of 6:2:2. The soil obtained after evenly mixing can provide sufficient nutrition for the cactus.

Cactus soil replacement

The frequency of changing the soil of cactus is about once every 1-2 years. It is best to change the soil in spring and autumn. There is no need to water before changing the soil. Keep the soil in the pot dry. When changing the soil, check the root growth of the cactus. If rot occurs, repair the roots. During the soil changing process, you need to prepare gloves to avoid damage to your hands from the thorns on the plant.
