How to graft a pomegranate tree

How to graft a pomegranate tree

The pomegranate tree is a tropical evergreen tree species, while in the north it is a deciduous shrub or small tree. In order to improve the quality of the pomegranate, grafting is often used to improve the pomegranate tree.

Pomegranate tree grafting time

The best time to graft a pomegranate tree is generally from late March to mid-April in spring. This period of time is the most suitable because the pomegranate tree is in its growth period, so the cut part can recover faster and the survival rate after grafting can be greatly increased.

Pomegranate tree grafting technology

1. Cleft grafting:

Before grafting a pomegranate tree, first use a knife to smooth the cross section of the rootstock, and then split it vertically. At this time, be careful not to cut too deep, about 4-5 cm deep will be enough. Cut a piece of strong scion from the old branch, cut the lower end into a wedge shape, then pry open the cut of the rootstock with the back of a knife, insert the scion, cover it with a plastic bag and tie it tightly. This will enable the pomegranate tree to grow better after grafting.

2. Subcutaneous grafting:

For subbark grafting, first, choose a position close to the rootstock, and choose a smooth and flat side as much as possible. Use a knife to make a cut, and then use the blade to gently pry open the bark, insert the cut branches into it, wrap the outside tightly, and that's it.
