How to Prune Grapevines

How to Prune Grapevines

If you want to produce more grapes, you must do a good job of pruning the grape trees, utilize the nutrients wasted on excess branches and leaves, and try to make the plants produce more and better quality fruits.

Grapevine pruning methods

The best time to prune grape vines is around June in summer and December in winter. The specific time depends on the climate and variety. In summer, it should start with bud removal, and in winter, it should be combined with the variety. If it is a variety with poor cold resistance, the pruning time should be appropriately advanced, and the vines should be covered with soil after pruning to avoid frostbite.

When pruning grape vines, you can cut back the branches at 2-3 pairs of buds on the grape vines. This will help the seedlings absorb nutrients and is mainly suitable for grape vines that are 1-2 years old.

You can also do long tip pruning, which is mainly for branches that grow too long on the grape vines. Choose the position where there are 6-12 pairs of buds on the vine branches and leaves of the grape vines, and cut off 6-10 cm branches. Otherwise, the overly long branches will block the light of the underlying branches.

Grapevine pruning precautions

1. Fruiting period: When pruning, all useless branches such as dead branches, diseased and insect-infested branches and overgrown branches should be cut off, and only fully mature new shoots with full and fleshy buds should be retained as much as possible.

2. Take good protection: Protect the pruning mouth, use pruning mouth protective agent or white latex to apply the pruning mouth, and tie it up as you prune. This will make the pruned grapes lay a good foundation for a high yield in the second year.
