How often should you fertilize your succulent plants?

How often should you fertilize your succulent plants?

1. How often

Although succulents originally grow in relatively barren desert areas, their demand for nutrients is not small. If not enough fertilizer is applied, it is likely to result in slow growth. The time for fertilizing varies according to different types. Fertilizer is applied in May for plants growing in summer and in September for plants growing in winter. Generally, fertilizer is applied once every half a month.

2. Fertilization techniques

1. Fertilizer selection: It is generally better to choose compound fertilizer with a close ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Since the root system of succulents is relatively fragile and cannot withstand concentrated fertilizers, it must be diluted sufficiently before applying fertilizer. You can also choose slow-release fertilizer, which will take effect slowly and will not burden its growth.

2. Preparation of base fertilizer: When planting succulents, appropriate base fertilizer will be more helpful for their growth. Generally, wood ash, bone meal or decomposed animal manure, etc. are used. These fertilizers should be mixed into the potting soil, but the amount should not be too much.

3. Top dressing method: Appropriate top dressing should be applied during the growth period. For faster growing plants, fertilize once every half a month; for slower growing plants, fertilize once a month. Do not water before fertilizing. Wait until the soil in the pot is dry, loosen the soil appropriately, and then apply fertilizer. This will allow the roots to absorb more fully.
