How to grow asparagus fern in winter

Keep warm

Asparagus fern is native to southern Africa. It is not cold-resistant and cannot overwinter outdoors in the north. In mid-October every year, when the temperature drops sharply, the asparagus fern should be moved indoors in time and the room temperature should be kept above 15℃. The flower pot should be placed on a sunny windowsill, and the leaves should be kept some distance from the glass to prevent the leaves from being partially frozen and turning yellow.

Proper watering

Asparagus fern is adapted to growing in a humid environment. The dry air in the north in winter is extremely unfavorable to the growth of asparagus fern, which is the main reason for its drying tips.

You can spray the leaves at noon every day to keep the branches and leaves green. Although asparagus fern likes moisture, it is best not to water it too much. If the soil in the pot is too wet for a long time, the roots will easily rot, the leaves will turn yellow, and even the plant may die. However, if the soil in the pot is too dry, it will also cause yellow leaves or burnt tips. Therefore, by keeping the soil in the pot semi-dry to moist condition, the branches and leaves of asparagus fern can be kept green all year round.

The water quality should preferably be fresh water that does not contain salt, alkali and other harmful substances. Tap water should be left for 1 to 2 days to allow the water temperature to reach room temperature before use.

Reasonable fertilization

Asparagus fern likes fertilizer, and can be applied with thin liquid fertilizer once every half month, mainly nitrogen fertilizer. It is more ideal to use compound flower fertilizer for indoor flowers. Reasonable fertilization can make the branches and leaves dark green and upright, and improve the ornamental value.

Appropriate amount of light

Asparagus fern is suitable for growing in a semi-shaded environment. In winter when the indoor light is weak, it can be exposed to appropriate light and should be placed in a sunny and windproof place. If it is placed in the shade for a long time, the leaves will turn yellow.

Beware of smoke and dust

Asparagus fern has weak resistance to smoke and dust. If you use a fire to heat your room in winter, in addition to reducing smoke and dust as much as possible, you should also ventilate the room at noon on sunny days to keep the air fresh.

In addition, asparagus fern should be placed away from kitchen fumes and air-conditioning vents, and should not be too close to heaters.
