How to deal with frostbitten leaves of succulents (can succulents with frostbitten leaves turn soft and black be saved)

For cold-intolerant plants, an ambient temperature of 5°C is a warning line:

Although different varieties of succulents have different tolerance to low temperature environments.

But for most succulent plants, except for slow growth or stagnation when the temperature is above 5℃, frostbite will basically not occur as long as the soil in the pot is kept dry and water is not sprayed on the leaves.

When the ambient temperature continues to be below 5℃, frostbite of varying degrees may occur. At this time, flowers and plants in northern areas can be moved into warm rooms in time for the winter.

In the southern regions, it is necessary to stop outdoor cultivation and move plants to enclosed balconies or windowsills to spend the winter. In addition to avoiding vents, you can also build small warm basins or use plant fill lights for a short time to increase light and raise the ambient temperature.

Frostbite in succulents is also divided into grades, and can be treated according to the severity:

Plants like succulents, which have small but thick leaves, cannot tolerate the cold and can easily get frostbite.

In this case, many friends would just throw away the succulents, which is a pity. So, how to treat succulents after frostbite?

⑴ The leaves become soft, which is the primary stage:

The Master is a thin-leaf variety and has poor cold resistance. The softening of the bottom leaves is a primary sign of frostbite, proving that the ambient temperature is already low.

You can move the flower pot to a slightly warmer place and let it cool down naturally. Most of them can cool down on their own after the ambient temperature rises slightly .

Apart from the leaf tips and the outermost leaves becoming a little soft and burnt, there are generally no other problems. These frostbitten leaves will slowly dry up and fall off with subsequent growth and metabolism, and will basically not affect the appearance.

(2) The leaves are translucent, which is intermediate:

When the leaves of the plant become translucent, it means that the water in the cells has condensed. This type of frostbite is already serious and can only be moved to an environment around 10℃ or slightly warmer than the current environment to allow it to freeze naturally.

Never try to freeze the leaves quickly in a heat source environment such as a radiator, electric heater, or fill light. The rapid temperature increase will accelerate the melting and blackening of the leaves.

A small number of cases of this type of frostbite can be relieved on their own after 2-3 days , but most will leave some black marks due to frostbite, or burnt tips or scorched tender leaves to varying degrees.

⑶Fully transparent leaves are the ultimate:

When the leaves of the plant become completely transparent and the branches become soft due to frostbite, it proves that the frostbite is very serious. Even if it is moved to a warmer environment to thaw, it will most likely melt and turn black.

If the rhizomes of such succulents have not been frozen, you can try to cut off their heads. However, if the rhizomes have been frozen and become transparent, there is basically no way to save them .
