Are orchids suitable for the balcony? (What tips should be taken when growing orchids on the balcony at home)

Nowadays, everyone lives in high-rise buildings, and orchids are generally cared for on the balcony. But as we all know, the conditions on the balcony are not very good, especially on enclosed balconies, where it is difficult for plants to grow well.

Moreover, orchids are an elegant flower. They were very expensive at that time, but now some varieties have been reduced in price and are very cheap, so many people will buy one.

However, it is easy to have problems when growing orchids on the balcony. If not grown properly, they will not bloom, and in serious cases, their roots and leaves will rot. In fact, growing orchids on the balcony also requires skills. Once we have mastered it, we can do enough according to their "preferences" and it will be difficult to grow them badly.

As long as you operate properly, it is not difficult to grow new buds and flowers in your home. Today I will tell you about his preferences. You just need to follow reasonable operations.

First, lighting:

The angle of light is different in different seasons, and the balcony has a fixed orientation, so it is important to handle the light well. The best balcony for growing orchids is facing north and south, as the south-facing direction has the most ideal light in all seasons.

In summer, the sun is directly overhead at noon, and the balcony can block the strongest sunlight. In winter, the temperature is low, but the balcony can be illuminated around noon.

If there is no north-facing balcony, we can change the location of orchids according to the seasons so that they can receive weak light for 3 hours a day.

If there is no sunlight in a certain season, you can still grow orchids on the windowsill. If you grow orchids on a west-facing balcony in summer, you should pay special attention to the strong sunlight from the west, which can easily kill them. Pay attention to shade.

Second, the temperature:

The temperature is not something we can decide. Each climate changes differently. The suitable temperature for orchids is between 15 and 28 degrees Celsius.

It grows slowly when the temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius, and is easily frozen to death when the temperature is below zero. When the temperature is above 32 degrees Celsius, the leaves are easily dried and burned. If there is strong light, it is easy to die.

When growing orchids on the balcony, it is recommended that you place a thermometer next to the orchids.

Orchids can grow healthily and bloom as expected in full sun or bright light + 3 hours of light when the temperature is not higher than 28 degrees Celsius. When the temperature is higher than 28 degrees Celsius, shade is needed, and when the temperature is lower than 5 degrees Celsius, it should be brought indoors for the winter.

Third, planting material:

Growing orchids on a balcony is different from growing orchids outdoors. Most balconies have insufficient ventilation. Every time you water them, the planting materials will remain moist for much longer than orchids grown outdoors. Planting materials that are too moist can easily breed bacteria.

Therefore, the humus of orchids maintained on the balcony should not be too much, and the water retention capacity should not be too good.

When growing orchids on the balcony, I recommend not using too much bark and soil with humus.

It is recommended that you mix 2 parts of rotten pine bark + 4 parts of small and medium-sized Akadama soil + 4 parts of rusty small stone particles together. This kind of planting material makes it easier to alternate between dry and wet planting materials, and watering is more flexible.

Fourth: Humidity:

Humidity is the most difficult aspect to deal with when growing orchids on the balcony. The humidity required for orchids to grow must reach above 60%. The high humidity environment is the reason why orchids in the wild can grow normally without human intervention or watering.

The humidity of the balcony generally does not exceed 25% on sunny days except on rainy days, and even does not exceed 10% in autumn.

"If the humidity is not enough, spray it." During daily maintenance, you can spray the orchid leaves 2 to 3 times a day.

In hot and dry seasons, you can spray 3 to 5 times. You can also place several low, wide-mouthed basins filled with water above the place where the orchids are maintained, in the opposite direction of the wind, and use the principle of faster evaporation due to increased area to increase the humidity of the environment.
