Will roses freeze to death if placed outdoors in winter (do they need to be moved indoors in winter)?

Roses have a certain degree of cold resistance. Different rose varieties have different low temperature resistance. Generally speaking, they can withstand temperatures around minus 10-15 degrees Celsius, and some varieties can withstand temperatures around minus 20 degrees Celsius .

Even so, it is still necessary to take measures to keep warm in winter, but China has a large span from north to south, and the temperature difference in winter is still relatively large. Whether to keep warm depends on the region you are in.

Generally speaking, areas without heating in winter can survive the winter naturally, while areas with heating need to take measures to keep warm.

Several situations in which roses are frozen to death

1. In extremely cold areas, people may freeze to death

This situation mainly occurs in extremely cold areas in the north, such as the Northeast, where the low temperatures in winter are dozens of degrees below zero, which is obviously beyond the tolerance range of roses. If they are not kept warm, they will be frozen to death.

2. In areas where the weather is not too cold, the tree dies because its branches are dried up by the wind.

The winter temperature is clearly within the tolerance range of roses, but roses still cannot survive the winter. In this case, the roses are not frozen to death, but the wind dries up the branches and dies. Therefore, even in areas that are not too cold, do not take it lightly and pay attention to wind protection in winter.

3. Roses brought indoors will die from lack of nutrition

Many flower lovers will put roses indoors for wintering, which is fine. But you should pay attention to the indoor temperature. When the temperature is higher than 5 degrees, the roses will break dormancy and sprout again, and they will grow rapidly above 15 degrees.

However, the light indoors is poor, and the roses cannot carry out effective photosynthesis. Without sufficient nutrients, they will slowly die.

How to keep roses warm in winter

Roses will naturally shed their leaves in winter, and they need to be heavily pruned after that, retaining a height of 10-20 cm.

In areas where the winter temperature is below -10 degrees Celsius, it is necessary to keep warm. Ground-planted roses can be directly buried in the soil or covered with straw. Potted roses can be covered with plastic bags and then wrapped with quilts and other insulation materials.

Even in areas above -10 degrees Celsius, you must not be careless. You must prevent the branches from being dried out by the wind. You must do a good job of windproofing them and place them in a sheltered place.

For roses that spend the winter indoors, the temperature should not exceed 5 degrees to keep them in a dormant state. If you can't keep them in a dormant state, try to place them in a place with good light.

In addition, in order to improve the rose's resistance to cold, before winter, when the rose is still growing, reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer and increase the amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

Also, the cold resistance of small and large rose seedlings is different. In areas where large seedlings can survive the winter, small seedlings may not be able to withstand it. This is also something to note.
